Apple tree leaf issue

Asked May 29, 2018, 2:40 PM EDT

I just planted these apple trees about 4 weeks ago. They started recently showing spots on the leaves. Some of the leaves are curling as well. As far as I'm aware, we don't have any cedar trees on our property. We have some pine trees but I think cedar trees are different. Is this cedar rust? If so, should I use a fungicide now? The trees are dwarf size and are currently 3 to 4 feet tall.

Apples are very susceptible to pest and disease problems and eventually require a spray schedule for control. Based on your photos you are dealing with cedar apple rust. See our publication on pome fruit for more information and our website for growing information as well as spray schedules. Look at the spray schedule from Va Tech on rust and you will have to spray based on the disease and timing of application.
