which tools would you suggest to scrape off what's left of a failing lawn. Ground cover garden is next. Shape spade? flat shovel? Not a big area; 7x23 thanks!

The following is good information about removing sod, https://www.finegardening.com/article/4-ways-to-remove-sod
A flat headed spade works well for turf removal.

thanks for your answer. Do I dig straight down with the spade or go at it more on a horizontal effort? I want to get enough of the roots so they won't grow back.

Work the spade underneath the sod horizontally, but you want to go down about 4-6 inches.
