biting mites infesting our house

Asked May 29, 2018, 1:55 PM EDT

We are plagued by biting mites that are small as this "." They are in our clothes, bed, furniture, bodies etc. I have a hand magnify glass to see them. also caught some on clear tape. Is there information on ID of mites and how to clear our house and possessions and ourselves and pets? We have a dog and cat. We also keep chickens and think they maybe a source of mites. We know they are biting us from welts we wake up with and I crushed one and it smeared red fluid. A web search for this has turned up some info and pictures but no match. The mites i looked at had small head bigger rear end with 6 or 8 legs and white and black spots on the rear parts they are not ticks for sure. Any help is welcome thank you. Steve Holmes

Hi and thanks for your email to Ask an Expert.

It is best to bring in a sample to the Master Gardener plant clinic for a correct ID. There is a scope in the office that will give us a closer perspective and see identifying characteristics. If we are unable to identify them in the office, samples can be sent to campus for correct ID. You can bring in the sample of insects on the tape but if you can find some live specimen, that would be ideal. Bring it to the Hood River County Extension office at 2990 Experiment Station Drive during our plant clinic hours. The clinic is open on Monday afternoons from 1-4pm and Thursdays from 9am-12pm and 1-4pm. You will also find Master Gardener volunteers at the Hood River Supply ACE Hardware on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Saturday of each month from 9am-1pm and the Hood River Saturday Farmers Market the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of each month.
