Help identifying this bush?

Asked May 25, 2018, 5:33 PM EDT

I’m about to move and I happened upon this bush on the property. A week ago, it was just a wood twig that looked dead; and when I came by yesterday, it looked like this. Any pros have an opinion on what it is?

Prince George's County Maryland weeds plant identification native pokeweed

This looks like it could be Common pokeweed (Phytolacca americana).
It is a perennial native weed with a deep taproot. You can see the vestiges of last years plant. If you cut a branch it should be hollow and wet.
They get droops of purple berries that birds love (and spread around) in the late summer into fall.
