termites in wood chips

Asked May 24, 2018, 7:31 PM EDT

We had a free load of wood chips delivered this winter and spread them in our yard. It now appears that very tiny termites are infesting the chips. What should I do?

It’s highly unlikely the creatures in the wood chips are termites. In order to survive they need to be with their very large “family” which includes 100s to 1000s of worker sisters, also the reproductive king and queen.

Please send several well-focused images of the insects so that we can resolve this issue with you. To obtain good images, collect a number in a lidded clear container and, then, freeze them overnight.

If it’s impossible to get good images, please take 6 or more samples, secured in a rigid container, to the Clackamas County Master Gardener office, 200 Warner–Milne Rd., Oregon City, OR 97045. Hours: 9 AM – 12 Noon and 1 PM – 4 PM, Monday through Friday, except holidays.
