Lawn Violets

Asked May 23, 2018, 4:46 PM EDT

Can you please recommend an effective way to rid my lawn of violets. They are getting worse year to year and routine pesticides don't seem to work. Is there an effective herbicide that works? If you could recommend a specific brand by name, that would be great. Some have suggested Solitare or Drive? But I'd really appreciate your thoughts. Thanks much!

Look at 'wild violets' at the end of this online publication for what is effective on violets: https://extension.umd.edu/sites/extension.umd.edu/files/_images/programs/hgic/Publications/non_HGIC_...

Keep in mind that it is much more effective to spray the toughest perennial weeds twice in early fall, at about 10 day intervals. At that time they will absorb herbicides down to their roots better.
Lastly, this is a native plant in Eastern North America, and as such fills a place in the natural ecology. You might consider making the lawn conditions less hospitable, and letting it grow in the other areas.
