Below is a link describing in detail how to manage or control English ivy. If you decide to use a chemical remember to follow all the precautions on the label of the product you use. Also, please note that both glyphosate and Triclopyr should not be sprayed on, or allowed to drift on, trees, tree trunks or other desirable plants. Be cautious around water, and mow or clip off flowers in the areas so that bees and other pollinators are safe.

Chemical treatments take some time for the chemical to move into the roots and kill the whole plant. So, when you treat with a chemical, even if the plant looks dead, leave the dead leaves for up to two weeks or for the recommended time that is stated on the label. English ivy is difficult to control and so may need a second or third treatment of the plants as they re-sprout.
