Lilac bushes with a problem

Asked May 22, 2018, 8:15 PM EDT

Three of our older lilac bushes have curled in leaves. They are flowering but leaves are curled in. This has been going on for quite a few years now. Attached are some photos. We are hoping you can give us some advice, suggestions? They are located at the North end of our backyard. We live in Rosevllle. Thanks in advance. Nairy D.

Leaf distortion and curling can be a result of pesticide damage. Since you say this has been happening over a period of years that is not likely. More likely is a common lilac disease blight from a bacterium and one of the characteristics is blackening of leaves. I can’t tell if I am seeing leaf blackening or bark but it does look like black on leaves.
