Rhododendron issue

Please see the attached picture of a rhododendron with brown leaves. This was planted last year and has been given acid. Is this a bug or soil issue?

After the very cold, dry, windy winter we just experienced many broadleaf evergreens such as your rhododendron suffered from what is called winter damage. It is not serious and most likely these leaves will fall off, if not they can be removed. Your photo shows new growth which is excellent. Next fall if it is dry again deeply water the shrub before the ground freezes. Please see the following information from our website, http://extension.umd.edu/hgic/winter-damage-trees-and-shrubs
