Spots on tree

We have a young maple tree with moss and white spots in the trunk and branches. What is this? Is it harmful? What should we do?

Moss on the side of a tree is a normal phenomenon. The green scale is lichen, also fairly normal. And the white patches are also lichen. Read here about lichen and moss:
