Cistern Water for Vegetable Garden

Asked May 20, 2018, 8:18 AM EDT

I was wondering if the cistern on my property (20 ft deep, circa 1820) is viable to water my garden. Is it safe? Would a water kit be needed to test? I live in southeast Pennsylvania on a farm property. There is a ton of water in it, and I'd love to sink a pump there to use it.

Sorry for the delay. I have been out of my office a lot over the past two weeks. This is out of my area of expertise. However, I would have the water tested for bacteria, fertilizer and pesticides. National Testing Laboratories may be of service. Their website is The test package called "Watercheck plus pesticides" is very thorough and costs about $200.
