Cistern Water for Vegetable Garden

Asked May 20, 2018, 8:18 AM EDT

I was wondering if the cistern on my property (20 ft deep, circa 1820) is viable to water my garden. Is it safe? Would a water kit be needed to test? I live in southeast Pennsylvania on a farm property. There is a ton of water in it, and I'd love to sink a pump there to use it.

Hi:
Sorry for the delay. I have been out of my office a lot over the past two weeks. This is out of my area of expertise. However, I would have the water tested for bacteria, fertilizer and pesticides. National Testing Laboratories may be of service. Their website is http://www.watercheck.com/. The test package called "Watercheck plus pesticides" is very thorough and costs about $200.
