Non toxic weed barriers

I am looking for a long lasting weed barrier for my herbs...thyme, mint, etc.that won't leach lead, boa, arsenic, etc into soil and roots and thus the leaves we eat.

Hello,

The longest lasting would be pea gravel. Then probably pine straw, although it isn’t always available here, and then wood chips. Here is an article that lists these, and some others—-
