how to get rid of small trees in perennial garden

Asked May 7, 2018, 3:12 PM EDT

I have very small trees in my perennial garden - but they're large enough I cannot pull them out (up 1 probably 1" diameter). I dug out a couple but the roots on others are too deep. Can I cut them off below the soil and use Triclopyr as described in your article 'Removing trees and shrubs' without harming my plants or might it get into the roots of my perennials? Darn old maples :(

Yes, you can do as you say. The roots of your perennials should not be harmed. Make sure to do this on a windless day - and, of course, follow all of the directions on the herbicide you use.
