Brilliance Autumn Ferns

Asked May 3, 2018, 9:13 AM EDT

I planted my first ferns this past June and they seemed to do well. in the winter they started looking raggedy but I figured that was normal. Now spring is here and they don't look any different, i.e., some brown parts and no new signs of growth yet. Is this normal for this type of fern, or is there a chance they died over the winter?

It is normal for these ferns to look like this at the end of the winter. Soon you should start seeing the new heads emerge and you can cut back the old foliage. At Cylburn Arboretum in Baltimore last week, the ferns were just barely starting to put up new growth. Give them a little time yet, and then you can cut out the old growth.
