I have 2 questions about buckthorn:
1. Every year we dig this stuff up and every year more comes back. Help! The roots are so deep it's impossible to get them all.
2. Can we put buckthorn in our regular lawn waste to be taken by the city or does it need to be handled a different way?
Thank you!

You will have to either treat the stump of the buckthorn or use a mechanical method of removing it. Painting the cut immediately with roducts containing glyphosate (Round-Up) or triclopyr (Garlon). There will be new plants coming up from the seeds dropped from the adult shrubs. You should be able to pull them out fairly easily if you get to them while they are still small. Here is our publication on controlling buckthorn: http://www.extension.umn.edu/garden/yard-garden/weeds/controlling-buckthorn/
The wood and leaves can be put out with regular yard waste but do not put the berries in there.

Thank you for this very helpful information! Watch out buckthorn--we're comin' for you!
