Hello, This plant shows up in the shady part of my backyard. Could you please tell me what it is? Is it a native species that is good for the environment? Thanks,

This is a very young sprout, but it looks like pokeweed, a native plant which produces big panicles of purple berries relished by birds. For a more positive ID, look at photos online of pokeweed and compare to your plant as it gets more mature foliage this spring and summer. The berries are often used used by kids to make "ink", but they should not be eaten.

This is a perennial and the tuber will grow quite large and send up suckers, so new stems will pop up occasionally. If you have a natural area, it should be fine.
