Sick Angelwing Begonia

Asked April 29, 2018, 1:01 PM EDT

I have had this Angelwing begonia for over 30 years. About 6 months ago it started getting sick with bright silvery looking spots followed by leaf drop. I have tried every watering method and even cut it back to stubs. The result was the same with the new leafs. Please and thank you

Thank you for your question. I believe your plant has become infected with a bacterial leaf spot described in this OSU publication: https://pnwhandbooks.org/plantdisease/host-disease/begonia-leaf-spot As you will read, it is easily transferred among the parts of the infected plants, as well as to some others, so, if you intend to keep it, sterilized equipment is key. Although cultural controls are recommended, if you want to try a chemical approach, only the one marked “H” is available to the home gardener. Hope this is helpful. Good luck!
