First Spring Mow

Asked April 29, 2018, 9:33 AM EDT

Moved to Victoria at the end of August last year from Kansas City. Not sure when and how high to do the first mow of the season. New sod last fall, fertilized so guessing first application should be Nitorogen? First weekend of May good to mow and fertilize?

This calendar will be useful as you plan your lawn care activities:

Late summer and fall are the best times to apply fertilizer. The timing and frequency of application and the amounts to apply depend upon your lawn management objectives (high or low maintenance).

When to begin mowing depends upon seasonal factors that vary from year to year. Generally speaking, it's best to begin mowing when grass leaf blade growth reaches 3 inches.

The following bulletin was prepared for Illinois residents but most of the information in it also applies to Minnesota.
