Can I put ashes from my wood stove on the compost pile to be used for gardening later?

Wood ashes can be used sparingly in your compost pile. They will raise the pH of anything that they are added to, so take care especially if you plan on using the compost in areas where you grow any acid-loving plants. The Michigan Master Composter Manual recommends that you only "sprinkle handfuls" per 4 cubic foot compost pile.
