Deer resistent native plants

Asked April 27, 2018, 12:28 PM EDT

I need advice on finding shade loving plants that provide color and hopefully are native to MD. I prefer perennials. My beautiful day lilies cannot withstand the attack of the deer. Any suggestions appreciated

Here are a few choices you might consider. These are perennials that can handle shade and they are considered deer resistant.
Columbine (Aquilegia canadensis)
Bleeding heart (Dicentra eximia)
Fetterbush (Leucothoe)
Virginia sweetspire (Itea virginica)
Foam flower (Tiarella cordifolia)
Sweet pepperbush (Clethra alnifolia)
Lungwort (Pulmonaria) - non-native
Andromeda (Pieris japonica) - non-native

The Chesapeake Bay Native Plant Center has a great database you can search to find out more about these plants and others that will grow well in shade. http://www.nativeplantcenter.net/
