Starting a Christmas Tree Farm

Asked April 27, 2018, 12:16 PM EDT

Hi,

My family wants to start a small choose-and-cut Christmas tree farm in Oregon, OH (Lucas County) on about 10 acres. I know this is somewhat broad, but does anyone have tips about running this type of a business?

Also, the land we would be purchasing is currently being used as a soybean field. What kind of work would we have to do in order to prepare this area to grow trees? Are there certain trees that would grow better than others in my area?

Thank you!

Hello,

It is great that you are interested in starting a Christmas tree farm. There are lots of things that need to be considered before you start the operation. I would be glad to talk with you about to answer some of your questions. Please send me an email at apsley.1@osu.edu if you have specific questions or would like to arrange a time to discuss. Also OSU Extension has a publication which will give you some good information to get started: http://estore.osu-extension.org/Ohio-Christmas-Tree-Producers-Manual-P377.aspx

Another great source of information about growing Christmas tree in Ohio is the Ohio Christmas Tree Association. They have summer meeting which is a great place to meet other growers, visit a tree farm, and to learn from the presentations: http://ohiochristmastree.org/calendar-of-events/

Michigan State University also has a great web page with many resources: https://www.canr.msu.edu/christmas_trees/

Again do not hesitate to email me at apsley.1@osu.edu if you would like to schedule a time to discuss.
