clover as ground cover?

We've been considering using minny clover as a ground cover on our back yard where we have a difficult time maintaining grass, we believe largely because of traffic from our 3 doberman. I'm interested in your opinion. From what I've read, it seems to be a natural weed reducer and doesn't overwhelm the grass. Plus, it's very tough and resilient and doesn't require a lot of care.

Turf is the best cover for high traffic so with 3 dogs a lush lawn is probably not possible without very frequent watering and overseeding. If the dogs have a favorite route covering that with mulch may be preferable to bare soil. Mulch will also improve the soil in anticipation of the dogs slowing down when they are older and running less.
