Can you compost citrus peels?

Asked April 24, 2018, 1:03 PM EDT

I have seen conflicting information on composting citrus peels. I have seen places say it makes soil too acidic or they break down slowly. I have seen other places say citrus peels are fine. Can you give me the complete picture? Is it a mixture of the above? How or when should citrus peels be added to the compost pile? Thanks, Anna Rochester, MN

Hello,

Thank you for your question.

I checked with a certified U of M Extension Master Gardener who is avid composter, her reply.....Should be OK in an outdoor pile. Absolute Never in a worm bin.

Hope this helps.
