grasses for landscaping

Asked April 16, 2018, 11:48 AM EDT

Want to replace some of the manicured lawn with native tall, pretty grasses I can let go. Ideally it would provide a boundary to neighboring lots and be attractive. Any suggestions? I live in a development on a lake. Would love several species if possible.
Thanks, Muriel

Hi Muriel,
My apologies for how long it has taken to respond to your question.
Here are some suggested ornamental grasses.

Little bluestem Schizachyrium scoparium (1-3 feet tall)
Indiangrass Sorghastrum nutans (3-5 feet tall)
‘Bluebird’ – blue-gray foliage
‘Holt’ – early bloom, fall color
‘Sioux Blue’ – blue foliage

Prairie dropseed Sporobolus heterolepis (2-3 feet tall)

‘Karl Foerster’ Feather reed grass Calamagrostis x acutiflora (2-3 feet tall)

Korean feather reed grass Calamagrostis brachytricha (3-4 feet tall)

Switchgrass Panicum virgatum (3-5 feet tall)
‘Heavy Metal’ – blue foliage
‘Prairie Sky’ – sky-blue foliage

Once established, they need little supplemental irrigation (lawn irrigation may be enough to keep them healthy). The more water they are given, the taller they will get.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,
Tony
