Replacing a butterfly bush

Asked April 13, 2018, 3:34 PM EDT

I have a butterfly bush that I had to dig up and I would like to replace it with a native plant. I learned recently that the butterfly bush is not native. However I would like something that is a shrub, attracts butterflies and blooms all summer and is native to Md. Is there any such plant?

Great question and a great replacement: summersweet (Clethra). This native shrub has white spires of flowers in summer which butterfies love. Also, does not need yearly pruning like a butterfly bush does. Win-win! Great yellow fall foliage color, too.
