Basswood tree with several debarked limbs

Asked April 10, 2018, 9:41 AM EDT

I have a 50 ft tall 30 year old Basswood tree in my front yard in Maple Grove. (Not a little leaf Linden but the more palm sized heart shape leaf (I think is called a Basswood) This Winter I noticed 10-20 small branches that were completely debarked. I trimmed them off in mid-March. Since then I have noticed three or more newly debarked small to medium sized limbs. I noticed a neighbor has similar appearance of his Basswood I would appreciate any help.

They are both linden trees. Several people have noted squirrels involved in this action, we don't know why but think it may be territorial and is more common in Spring when offspring are born. Outside of removing the squirrels there is really nothing that can be done unless you find some way to keep them out of the trees..
