Trees being destroyed

Asked April 4, 2018, 12:28 PM EDT

We have 5 of the same tree planted in a row. the middle 2 are being eaten by something. We don't know what kind of trees we have and if whatever is infested them will spread to the remaining ones. They have large holes in the base of the trunk and the entire way up to the top where they are eaten away. Please tell me how to stop this from spreading and anything else i need to know thanks so much

We viewed your photos but cannot say for sure what type of trees they are. It is possible they may be an ash. The damage may be from woodpeckers feeding on insects possibly the emerald ash borer. This is an invasive pest and kills ash trees. Here is our website. You will have to remove the trees. http://extension.umd.edu/hgic/invasives/emerald-ash-borer
