Honeycrisp Apple Tree - Bark Damage/Girdled

Asked March 27, 2018, 10:50 AM EDT

I noticed the bark at the base of the trunk of my Honeycrisp apple tree has been eaten by some sort of rodent (see image). Unfortunately, the bark has been eaten around the entire circumference (about 6" around and about 8" high). I am concerned the tree has been "girdled" and will not survive. Is there anything I can do to save this tree or would it be better to replace it given the damage?
