fruit tree problem

Asked March 24, 2018, 3:41 PM EDT

A branch of a dwarf plum tree has a strange growth. Attached are photos. The growth runs along the top half of a branch for about 24", wide at the base of the branch and tapering towards the end. It seems isolated to this branch. Should let me know if I should cut off the branch or try to treat it in some way. Or perhaps its just a cosmetic problem?

This is a fungal disease known as black knot. It's very common. Here is our webpage which explains it and what to do about it: https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/black-knot-trees
