We have 2 straw bales on the septic drain field. Some type of animal has hollowed out the bales and has made piles of finely shredded straw right next to the bales. What type of animal do you think this is and how do I approach removing the bales from the septic this spring? We can see an opening to the east that is about 6 inches off the ground and 3-4 inches wide. Would a skunk have made a den in the bale? Your thoughts.
My guess would be voles:
Straw bales would be an ideal habitat.
