Hemlock tree

Asked March 21, 2018, 5:10 PM EDT

My 40 year old hemlock has been losing its needles for the past year. Is there anything I can do to stop this?

Please send us photos of the hemlock, both close up and entire shots, attached to a response email so that we can examine the needles closely. There could be many causes.

One possibility is hemlock woolly adelgid:https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/hemlock-woolly-adelgid-trees
Another possibility, also an insect: https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/scale-insects-hemlock
