Should I collect more than one sample?

Asked March 20, 2018, 5:46 PM EDT

I have a large vegetable garden, about 20ft by 40ft. Is it recommended to submit more than one sample, say from one from each end? I mix up my entire plot in the fall and will most likely do so again before planting in the spring.

When getting a soil test done, you should take samples from several areas of the garden, mix them together and then submit about a cup of the mixed soil sample for testing. For a 20 x 40 foot area you might want to collect 10-12 samples from various spots all around the garden. For soil sampling instructions you can check the MSU Soil Lab website at: http://www.spnl.msu.edu/Sampling.html
