maple planted 1 1/2 Years sgo
What could this discoloration be on our autumn blaze maple planted sept 2016? Is this something to be concerned about? Thank you! Lonnie

It looks like your maple has had some minor mechanical damage to the trunk. Maples 'bleed' in the spring as they get ready to flower. The sap begins to rise and if there is a wound is runs out of the wounded bark. This phenomenon has been exploited for centuries and is why we are able to have maple syrup on our pancakes. The good news is your tree will be fine. You may want to wash the sap off of the bark this spring so it doesn't attract wasps.
