Pruning roses

Asked March 4, 2018, 6:09 PM EST

Am I too late to cut back my roses? I usually cut them down to about 3 feet from the ground in February, but have not gotten a chance to do so this year. The stalks now have new growth. Plus with the past snow and cold, I am afraid cutting the canes down may shock the plant. Should I leave my roses alone this year or can I still cut?

Thank you for your question about rose pruning. You're at just the right time! Here's an article about roses that explains the why, when and how. And this week is supposed to be much warmer! Just be sure to dip your pruners into alcohol to kill any pathogens that might linger there and be transferred to other plants. Good luck!
