House Fly infestation

Asked March 4, 2018, 5:33 PM EST

We have a house fly infestation, can't figure out where they are coming from. Using fly strips that fill up in a matter of hours. Tried some of the natural remedies online but they do not work. We do have an ancient cat that urinates & defecates on newspaper on the floor. We do our best to clean up after him. Can you help us get rid of this problem? . We keep the kitchen (the area of most infestation) clean but they still keep coming. Help!!

Thank you for your housefly question. They cannot survive without a source of food and, while the cat's deposits may be a short term source for them, there have to be other places they are laying eggs. For most people, that means that (1) they found their way in through an opening and (2) there is garbage, rotting fruits or vegetables (often slightly open composting containers) or other places that they are attracted to but you can't smell. Here is a link to an Extension article which explains this pest and offers suggestions about controlling their population. Until you remove the food source (and plug holes that allowed them to enter), you'll continue to have them. Hope this is helpful. Good luck!
