I have a tree that is 16 ft from my house that has termites in it. Should I some how kill the termites before I take the tree down? If yes, how do I kill the termites?

When you remove the tree, that should take care of the termites.
It is too cold to treat for termites now.
It is normal for termites to occur naturally in the soil and the most important preventive measures you can take to make your home inhospitable to termites are eliminating any direct contact between wood and soil and reducing moisture in and around the house.
