Dwarf Burford Holly

Asked March 2, 2018, 12:52 PM EST

All the leaves on my holly are turning brown and falling off. The bark has darkened. What is wrong with this holly? What can I do to save it? It has never done this before. The holly was planted 22 years ago and has always been bright green and healthy. After this hard winter it looks awful, barely a green spot on it. The damage is very extensive. Thank you,

Many hollies in MD have been affected by winter damage. At this point the old foliage should drop and new foliage may emerge. The foliage can be slow to develop. It is possible some of the branches may be dead. Scratch the branches and look for green tissue. If you see it then the branches may be viable. Be patient before you prune.
