Eliminating Yellow Jackets in Pachysandra

Asked February 28, 2018, 10:49 AM EST

These are not Mining Bees. They swarm all season long. They appear to be Yellow Jackets. The pachysandra bed is located close to our front door entrance. In the center of the bed is a Serviceberry tree/Amalaenchier. They like the sap that falls from the tree. PLEASE tell us how we can eliminate them in this dormant/egg stage. Urgent to hear from you. Our son is allergic to bee stings.

Yellow jackets do not overwinter in the same area. The workers dieback and the queen overwinters elsewhere. They will not use the same site. There is no control now.
Based on your description it sounds like the serviceberry may have an issue with a sucking insect such as aphids or scale. These insects can excrete a honeydew as they feed. This can attract the bees that you are referring to. You will have to monitor your tree this season for any insect pests. Send us photos and any symptoms as soon as you notice them so we can see what you may be dealing with.
