Termites in a tree near my house

Asked February 24, 2018, 3:02 PM EST

I have a tree with termites in it. Should I kill the termites first and then cut the tree down?
How can I kill the termites? I had Terminix come out and they will NOT touch the tree.
Do you folks have a phone number that I can call to talk to a person about this issue?
Where are you folks located? I live in Bowie.

Prince George's County Maryland

Termites are normal in the landscape. They eat dead wood. If they are in your tree, we assume all or part of it is dead. When you remove the tree, that should take care of the termites. You do not need to treat your house unless the tree was within about 10 feet of the house. Even so, the house should be inspected. Termites in homes cannot be successfully treated except by professionals.
