Raspberry Selection & Spacing

Asked February 18, 2018, 11:56 PM EST

Hi, I am thinking about planting one row of raspberries along my fence, and then build some raised bed planters parallel to both the fence and raspberries. 1. How far from the fence should the raspberries be planted? 2. Should the raspberries be planted 2 feet apart from one another? 3. How much space should be given between the raspberries and the planter boxes? 4. What varieties might be best for the Sykesville area (north of I-70, between Frederick and Baltimore)? Thank you!

Here is our webpage on rapsberries: https://extension.umd.edu/growit/fruit-profiles/raspberries-and-blackberries It will tell you spacing as well as many other aspects of culture you will need to know.

This fact sheet on small fruit provides a list of recommended cultivars for each, including brambles: https://extension.umd.edu/sites/extension.umd.edu/files/_images/programs/hgic/Publications/HG68_Gett... It also gives advice on purchasing plants and getting them started.
