What type of plant is this?

Asked February 17, 2018, 11:38 AM EST

Hi, I am wondering what type of plant this is and if I should have (or still can) cut back the brown parts to make way for the new flower/plant. Or should I just leave it as is? Thank you!

Montgomery County Maryland pruning winter damage helleborus flower

This looks like Helleborus, Lenten rose, a perennial. If you see new growth, you can prune out the old brown foliage. Foliage is evergreen but can get battered by late winter. Prune off dead leaves back to the base. Plants eventually can reseed heavily.
