When Do Till My Garden?

Asked February 15, 2018, 11:47 PM EST

We Bought a home in early November 2017, but due to unpacking and settling in a relative with cancer, I didn't have time to prepare the ground for my Spring vegetable garden. Since we live in frost zone 6b and most planting is done in late April or early May, should I till the ground now or wait until March or later? Your advice will be greatly appreciated.

It is good you are thinking of preparing the bed now. At this point Begin by testing your soil. Results will give pH, lime, and nutrient deficiencies.
The pH level should be in the 6.2-6.8 range. If you look at University of Delaware Soil Lab their basic test includes lead http://extension.umd.edu/hgic/soils/soil-testing

Take a look at our website for planning a garden and preparing your soil. This can be done in the early spring as soon as you can work the soil and it is not too wet. You have the option of covering, slicing, or digging. http://extension.umd.edu/hgic/plants/planning-vegetable-garden http://extension.umd.edu/hgic/plants/prepare-your-soil
