Browning holly tree

Asked February 15, 2018, 12:54 PM EST

My approximately 10 feet tall holly tree is showing many more than usual brown leaves around the entire tree and more so nearer the top. Why, and should I be doing something about it. Thanks.

Many hollies in MD have been affected by winter damage. At this point the old foliage should drop and new foliage may emerge. The foliage can be slow to develop. It is possible some of the branches may be dead. Scratch the branches and look for green tissue. If you see it then the branches may be viable. Be patient before you prune. See our website for more information on winter damage.

Very helpful, Thanks!
