Cherry Trees

Asked February 7, 2018, 12:23 PM EST

Good Morning, I live in SE Bend and have read that one can grow pie cherries in Central Oregon. (Sour cherries) If yes, I would love to do this. Are there any varieties that you've specifically heard of that do well in our cold climate? Thanks, Diane

Hi Diane, yes, sour cherries can grow in Central Oregon. However, you live in an area that would really be pushing the limits of their environment. Even sour cherries struggle in our area. Here is a link to a publication which suggests varieties of fruit trees for Central Oregon. Remember, the further south you live the harder the growing conditions. https://catalog.extension.oregonstate.edu/ec1622 just click on the pdf button to get the publication. Good luck with your tree.
