When to start a compost pile ?

Asked February 6, 2018, 12:04 PM EST

I have just purchased a compost bin and I'm wondering how long I need to wait before starting to compost. Seems like the best time might be Fall when I have leaves and grass clippings to place at the bottom. Can I start one now? If so how's the best way to do it? Thanks!!

Hello there,

Glad to here that you are going to be composting. Composting is a great way to recycle yard waste and decrease landfill space. The short answer to your question is, it depends. You will need to have garden waste to compost. True, you may add some household scraps/garbage, but the majority of your compost materials should be from the garden. So, you may need to accumulate some garden waste before getting started.

Here is a link to a wonderful fact sheet that explains how to compost.

Good luck.
