Hazelnuts are not generally grown commercially in the Midwest. Most hazelnut production in the US is in Oregon, which has a radically different climate than we do. There is also some severe disease problems that can reduce the lifespan and production of hazelnuts.

Hazelnut Trees are Easy (Cornell): http://smallfarms.cornell.edu/2016/10/03/hazelnut-trees-are-easy/ . Please note the brief mention of Eastern Filbert Blight. Some nurseries are listed at the end of the article.

Univ. of Illinois: http://sustainability.illinois.edu/meet-ron-revord/ . This is a bio page for a UI professor who is working on hazelnuts. Definitely worth contacting him.

Eastern Filbert Blight (Wisconsin): https://hort.uwex.edu/articles/eastern-filbert-blight/

The Costs and Returns of Establishing and Producing Hazelnuts in the Willamette Valley (Oregon): http://arec.oregonstate.edu/oaeb/files/pdf/EM8748-E.pdf . Some good economic information.

Please let me know if I can be of any further help.
