I found one reference to red elderberry at an elevation of 8,500 feet. It was in a survey in Wyoming in 1912. I did not find another reference near that elevation. Black or blue elderberries are lower elevation. If you want to try it, use the red varieties.
I am including the URL to information on elderberries from the USDA. https://plants.usda.gov/plantguide/pdf/cs_sanic4.pdf

Good Luck,
