Pruning Rose Bushes

Asked January 13, 2018, 10:01 AM EST

When can I prune rose bushes? I bought a new house that has numerous older rose bushes that have been allowed to grow out of control. They seem healthy, but need pruning. I would like to prune them down relatively short and I would like to do it now because they are so scraggly-looking in my yard but wanted to make sure I can do it now.
Thank you.

Winter is a good time to prune rose bushes. Often roses are pruned in early spring (March and April) before first bloom. You can prune roses in this climate starting in January. You may want to do the cleanup pruning now and the more fine tuned pruning a little later.
