Garden Distance From Leach Field

Asked January 13, 2018, 12:07 AM EST

Hello, my name is Kevin. I recently moved to a 3 acre property and I have a septic system with a leach field. What is the safe distance to plant a vegetable garden and fruit trees (peach, apple, cherry) from the leach field? The land is mostly flat. I can see the natural grass that grows more over the leach field easily.

Adams County Colorado

Hey Kevin-

There is not a consensus in the sources I looked at about what is a safe distance to plant veggies from the leach field. Pathogens may travel a few inches up to a few feet though the soil depending on soil type and other factors. They will travel further in sandy soils than in clayey soils. I did see 10ft give as a recommended distance in several articles on the subject.

I hope this helps, please let me know if you have further questions.
