Ash trees are very susceptible to snow-load damage or disfigurement along the Front Range. Due to late spring freeze events, most ash trees have a lot of twiggy growth at the ends of the branches that accelerate the over-loading in snow events. The only way to avoid the downward branching habit is to remove a few of smaller branches (less than 1" diameter) from every scaffold branch in the tree. Arborists do this work and the process is called Crown Cleaning. There is no good way to correct downward facing branches once they begin growing toward the ground other than removing a few of them each year.
